Invisalign care, cleaning & oral hygiene

Eating & drinking with invisalign

One of the most popular reasons for choosing Invisalign orthodontic treatment is the ability to eat and drink normally with no dietary restrictions.

When eating and drinking (with the exception of water), we recommend removing your Invisalign aligners. There are several reasons for this:

  • You can stain your aligners
  • Strongly flavoured foods can make your aligners smell
  • Some foods can damage your aligners

Always store your aligners in your case until you’re done eating or drinking, and ready to put them back in. Rinsing them before placing them in your case, and again before putting them back in your mouth is a good idea.

Brushing & flossing with invisalign

Whether you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment or not, brushing and flossing regularly is key to good oral hygiene. After eating and drinking (with the exception of water), we recommend brushing and flossing to ensure that your teeth are nice and clean before putting your aligners back in.

Doing this will minimize the potential for plaque buildup and bacterial growth, which can cause staining, unpleasant odours, cavities and gum disease.

Caring for & cleaning your invisalign aligners

Keeping your Invisalign aligners clean is a pretty simple process.

Whenever you remove your aligners to eat or drink we suggest that you rinse them. This helps to remove plaque and saliva, which keeps them smelling fresh!

Whenever you brush and floss, we recommend that you also brush your aligners gently and thoroughly.

Soak your aligners a few times a week in a retainer cleaner and follow the manufacturer directions.

If you've been researching "types of braces", one of the questions you're probably wondering is if you should get Invisalign or braces? An ideal person to answer this question is an orthodontist. If your orthodontist feels that either Invisalign or braces are a viable option, you’ll then want to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each before making a decision. Conventional braces treatment involves metal or ceramic brackets glued to your teeth, connected by wires, and small rubber bands. Invisalign consists of clear plastic aligners that are switched out every two weeks or so for a new set. They are virtually invisible and are easier to clean than traditional braces because you can take your aligners out.
