You finished your Invisalign treatment. Congratulations! You are now enjoying your new smile and bite. What you do post orthodontic treatment to help maintain your new smile is important. This is known as the Invisalign retention phase.
Invisalign Treatment Retention Recommendations
Wear Your Retainer (teeth are sneaky)
Mar Orthodontics provides patients with a retainer upon completion of treatment. Retention is very important and wearing your retainer plays a big part in this.
You committed to straightening your teeth and underwent Invisalign treatment, now you need to commit to wearing a retainer. A retainer helps to keep your teeth straight by reminding them to stay in their corrected position.
For the first year we recommend that you remind your teeth 24/7, which means wearing your retainer for at least 20 hours a day (the same amount as you wore your aligners). After one year you can reduce wear time to only at night for 6 months, then finally to just three nights a week for your lifetime.
Always remind your teeth :)
Follow Up Appointments With Your Orthodontist
To make sure your smile continues to look good, follow up appointments with your orthodontist are required. Mar Orthodontics provides a one year follow-up plan (every three months/four times in the first year post treatment).
Your orthodontist will be examine your teeth to ensure that your retainer is fits properly and that your teeth have not shifted. Don’t forget to bring your retainer to these visits!
If your retainer if lost or broken please contact us immediately so that we can either repair or replace it as soon as possible (a repair or replacement fee will be charged).
Good Oral Hygiene
During the course of your Invisalign treatment you became an expert at brushing and flossing your teeth, and keeping your Invisalign aligners clean. At this point, we bet that you’ve practically got it down to a science. Also, since you’re so skilled, you’ve probably noticed that your oral hygiene routine take less time.
That’s great! Now all you need to do is to keep up the good work. Good brushing and flossing habits, as well as keeping your retainer clean will keep your smile looking awesome. It will also allow you to notice any possible changes in your teeth as time goes on.
